Labor day snuck up on me like a car in my blindspot; a glance in the rearview mirror would have revealed it but I was too busy looking forward to notice. I love everything about summer: people’s relaxed attitudes, the way my shins drip sweat after a run, the live music every weekend in Madison, the nightly chorus of cicadas, 15 hours of daylight.
Last weekend I was working in the garden, listening to Death Cab for Cutie on my ipod. “Summer skin” came on and the line hit me as hard as the impact of changing lanes into that invisble car next to me.
Then Labor day came and went
And we shed what was left of our summer skin
For what’s it worth, I am grateful for the wakeup call. I can’t deny the advent of autumn for much longer.
